Spring is my favorite season. It is a breath of fresh air after cold, dreary winter days. Warmer weather and more sunshine bring a feeling of newness and rebirth. Flowers begin to bloom and trees grow their leaves again—the sights and smells of spring feel magical.
It can be argued that melody is the most memorable aspect of a song. And, I would agree. However, often simply hearing a certain combination of words brings to mind a familiar song. Song couplets help make songs memorable and frequently highlight the pinnacle of a story, provide a thought-provoking turn of phrase, or even take a sharp turn as a surprise. Well-written couplets which flow organically from the lyrics delight the listener and the lyricist.
Nothing compares to being in love. In the previous blog I shared my Top Ten Favorite Love Songs—plus honorable mentions and favorites from The Great American Songbook. I also mentioned that in songwriting classes we are urged to find new and different ways to write love songs. We are told to never use the words sun, moon, or stars and to never use the phrase “heart and soul.”
Music has a way of speaking right to the heart. And, most especially, love songs express what we can’t say with mere words. I want to share my Top Ten Favorite Love Songs—just in time for Valentine’s Day!
Fall is not my favorite season. However, I do enjoy the cooler days with less humidity. I love the crispness of the air. I love the bold colors of the foliage on the trees, and watching the leaves drift gracefully through the sky to the ground. The smell of freshly raked leaves brings pleasant memories of raking leaves with my parents and of being able to rake leaves in my own yard as an adult.
When 1960 rolled around I was almost three years old. I grew up along with the music itself. These were my favorite songs during that time, not necessarily what I would choose now. As an adult, I have a broader knowledge of music from that era. Conspicuously absent are any Beatles’ songs. My older sister loved them and had their albums. Herman’s Hermits and The Monkees were my favorite groups.
This year the summer solstice occurs on Sunday, June 20 at 10:32 PM CDT and marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Many fun songs have been written about summer. The following are my Top Ten favorite songs about summer.
The Beatles are regarded as the most influential band of all time. They created a body of work that raised the bar for songwriting and have inspired countless artists to cover their songs. When I took songwriting classes in Nashville one of my teachers constantly used their songs as examples of the various lyric forms. The diversity of artists who have covered Beatles songs is a testament to the quality of their music. I want to share my Top Ten Favorite Beatles Covers.
When I arrived at NSAI Song Camp 101 I was eager to learn. I took pages and pages of notes. The following information from those notes captures tidbits of advice and inspiration from these wonderful teachers. Even though some of the information is specifically about songwriting, it also is helpful for anyone wanting to learn how to adapt a creative mindset.
On the night of November 24, 2006 I decided to become a songwriter. I wrote the word “songwriting” and the date on a sticky note and put it by my computer as a constant reminder. So, I want to be a songwriter. Now What?
