Thoughts for a New Year
Happy New Year! Turn the page. Pull out a blank canvas. Move ahead. Here are my thoughts for a new year.

Innocent. In the wrong place at the wrong time. Oblivious to his situation, he made it worse by not running away. He remained motionless—hanging precariously from the roof.
Reading is a challenge for me. I like the idea of reading and enjoy it when I actually do read. However, I have trouble making time and settling down long enough to read. While watching a YouTube video about writing, I came across a reading program by Ray Bradbury: read one poem, one short story, and one essay every night. It sounded easy enough—I could just read short examples of these. I did not realize when I started that Bradbury said to do it for 1,000 days!
Sometimes I get stuck in a rut of complacency or even discontent—living with blinders on my eyes or a pall over my emotions. When this happens, life feels ordinary and mundane. Nothing seems important.
Last weekend my husband and I returned to Aldridge Gardens—a thirty-acre woodland garden featuring a lake, wide trails, whimsical sculptures, native plants, azaleas, and hydrangeas. I needed a diversion, some sunshine, a wee bit of exercise, and a reminder of the beauty all around in nature. A walk in the gardens seemed like the perfect morning.
What do you write about, when you can’t think of anything or you don’t feel inspired? That is a great question. I feel stuck this week. I don’t want to write something just to write—and it be uninteresting or worse yet, not even worth reading.
Jigsaw puzzles are a way my husband and I relax. We are not always working on one. Sometimes months go by when we are not involved with a puzzle. When we are enjoying them, we may work three or four puzzles in succession.
Welcome to a New Year . . . I quit making New Year’s resolutions years ago after always having the same three: eat better, exercise, loose weight. I finally figured it wasn’t worth it to decide that on January 1 I would commit to those resolutions when I obviously had not done so in the past.
Some days, weeks, even months can feel monotonous and uninspired. Sometimes it is as if we are walking around in a daze–or, maybe it’s the feeling of having stepped into a deep, dark hole. If our creative senses are tired, often, all we need is something to give us focus, to inspire us, to invoke ideas—and, to help us find inspiration.
I love taking the scenic route to and from work. The beginning and end of the route is the same as other days, but instead of traveling the main highway I turn and traverse several roads that ramble through neighborhoods.

I am a composer, singer-songwriter, church musician, and writer.
I share my compositions, songs, stories, and essays — as well as tidbits and trivia about all kinds of music.
