To survive we need food, water, air, and shelter. While art may not be vital to fulfill our basic needs, it makes life better. Having art in your life brings joy and keeps you in touch with creation. Art is everywhere and often costs nothing to enjoy.
Simplify, slow down, be kind. And don’t forget to have art in your life —
music, paintings, theater, dance, and sunsets.
— Eric Carle (1929-2021) American-German author, designer and illustrator of children’s books
This advice seems obvious, but I can’t tell you how many times a day I stop and remind myself to slow down and notice the art and beauty around me. Sometimes I am laser focused on a project and I block out everything else. Sometimes I am so tired that my brain shuts down. Occasionally, my focus darts everywhere making me unable to really notice what is around me. When I do slow down and notice art, I am rewarded. My brain calms down, my heartbeat slows, I smile, and I feel happy. I am energized and often inspired to make art.
Happiness, not in another place, but this place; not for another hour, but this hour.
— Walt Whitman (1819-1892) American poet, essayist, and journalist
