As I looked outside this morning, I could not ignore the beauty in the awakening foliage and flowers. Try as I might to look away, to remain in a somber mood, and believe that all is lost—I could not stay in that mental space. Spring can’t be ignored.
Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!”
— Robin Williams (1951-2014) American actor and comedian
Spring is my favorite season . . . even with all the pollen and rain. I believe it is because spring always reminds me there is hope—for me and for our world. Sometimes you have to look past the bad to find the good—among the weeds to find the flowers (which is certainly true in my yard). Maybe in the world, we have to be the ones to make the good happen. It may not be easy. It is a choice of whether to ignore and turn away, or go out and do something.
As I sat down to write this blog, as is often the case, I will read a short essay. This morning I read “Mistaken Identity” from Malcom Guite’s collection In Every Corner Sing. In the essay he uses the phrase, “a ruin come to life again.” That expresses exactly what I observe every spring when everything dead comes alive again.
Can the season of spring be a metaphor for us? Spring is a tangible, visible phenomenon of ruin come to life again. And, in noticing this, I am partaking in this miracle. I am believing in possibilities because I witness them in spring. Yes, spring is a metaphor for me and what I can imagine for our world. All is not lost or dead—it is only dormant.
The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.
— Henry Miller (1891-1980) American novelist
These are a few pictures I took this morning. Spring can’t be ignored!
